How I Got Started making Dog Treats
Greetings dog lovers! My name is Donna Witt and I have been enthusiastically creating, baking and selling Reba's Healthy Gourmet Doggy Cookies (named after Reba, my beautiful German Shorthair) since 1999.
This all began back in the small town of Clatskanie, Oregon when I started reading the ingredients on pet food and dog treat labels more closely and was alarmed due to the bad stuff that was in them.
About the same time my mother told me she had made some cookies for her dog Couver, an adorable Schnauzer. She had tried an old family recipe, and even though she did not enjoy making them ("a lot of fuss" she said, "I would rather be golfing") her dog loved them! Instantly, an idea came to mind. I can provide healthful, tasty cookies for not only my dog but for dogs everywhere. I realized I can give time-crunched owners an easy way to get great treats for their dogs.
I wanted to create a unique recipe I could call my own. I started with the basic family recipe then added nutritious ingredients like organic flour, fresh fruit and vegetables, a vitamin mineral supplement, and finally, I added great flavors dogs love! Through trial and error and with the help of Reba - my O.C. T.T. Official Canine Taste Tester - the journey began.
I began commuting from Clatskanie to Portland in 2005, where I live now, to start selling Reba's Healthy Gourmet Doggy Cookies at the Portland Saturday/Sunday Market, a famous outdoor market that features exquisite handmade treasures and homemade goodies. In 2008 I met Peter, my companion and business partner and we continue to sell our delicious specialty dog cookies at the market and online.
